The Australian Women's Baseball team began their 2008 IBAF Women's World Cup campaign with a resounding 15-0 win against India on the opening day of competition in Matsuyama, Japan on Sunday.

Kim SCHULTE (QLD) started on the Madonna Stadium mound for the Australians and was solid across 3.1 innings, only allowing 2 hits.

With the bat, a barrage of hits from the entire line up was highlighted by three inside-the-park home runs from Shae LILLYWHITE (VIC), Samantha HAMILTON (VIC) and Tahnee LOVERING (NSW).  LILLYWHITE bagged three hits for the day, with HAMILTON, LOVERING and Katie GAYNOR (NSW) each knocking in three runs a piece. In all, every starter registered at least one hit.

Debutant Laura NEADS (NSW) closed it out for Australia in the fifth, with the game called due to the five inning mercy rule.

"I was really impressed with the intensity the girls showed throughout the game and they did not let up," said Head Coach John GAYNOR (NSW), adding, "We must however now turn our focus to our second game against Chinese Taipei as a win is vital for our progression in the tournament."

Australia will now face Chinese Taipei at 2.30pm on Monday afternoon, before a clash with the USA on Tuesday.
