Chinese Taipei concludes the first round in Group A of the 2011 IBAF 16U Baseball World Championship in Mexico with an even 2-2 record. They beat Australia 13-2 in seven innings at Panamerican Stadium in Lagos de Moreno on Tuesday afternoon. The team of Down Under finishes the first phase at 1-3, but still will move up with a loss by Brazil in the evening game.

Chinese Taipei decided the outcome in the second inning, when they put six runs on the board, highlighted by a two-run double of Chun Ho and a two-run single by Tse Wang. They added two runs apiece in the fourth, sixth and seventh innings to end the game early. Ho and Wang combined to drive in six runs overall. Wei Chang scored four times.

Australia only got on the board in the bottom half of the second inning, thanks to a two-run homerun by Karl Hoschke. The long ball, the first at Panamerican Stadium in the tournament, cleared the wall in left field. Otherwise they couldn’t produce anything except for a 3-for-3 performance by Andrew Hayes.

On the mound Chia Yang (W, 1-0) struck out nine batters in a complete game. He allowed just eight hits, two runs (1 ER) and a walk in seven innings. Zac Shepherd (L, 0-1) got charged six hits, seven runs (1 ER) and no walks in three innings to take the loss. All runs during the big rally in the second scored with two outs after an error.
