Travis Kalin, Monday, 11 January 2010

Saturday Nights game was one to remember for Heat fans. In front of a big crowd the Heat didn’t disappoint.

The South Australian bats started hot in the first inning. David Wahington started the game off with a walk and then back-to-back hits from Jeremy Cresswell and Stefan Welch loaded the bases. Then Ryan Murphy stepped up and smacked a double down the left field line scoring Creswell and Washington.

Kelly then got a strike out and an infield fly. Mathew Smith then came up with a two out hit to right field, which plated Welch and knocked Kelly out of the game.

The Heat’s young pitcher Nathan Driessen came into the game in a big situation and got Brendan Pett to fly out to centre field.

The Heat cut the lead down to two as the Heat’s clutch player of the year so far Tim Kennelly drove a single to center scoring Nick Kimpton from second.

In the seventh inning and the Heat down by one. The Heat’s bats came alive. Mitch Graham started the inning off with single. Nick Kimpton flied out to Left Field. Allan de San Miguel singled to left field advancing Graham to second. Tim Kennelly then singled to left field and Graham got thrown out at the plate. With two outs is when the fireworks started. Lachan Dale walked to load the bases, and Chris House smacked a double to the gap scoring Tim Kennelly and de San Miguel. Matt Kennelly then singled to right field scoring both House and Dale. Dallas Christison walked. Dean White singled to right field, which scored M. Kennelly. A balk call scored Christison and advanced White up 90 feet. Mitch Graham came up with a single to second base scoring White for the seventh run of the inning.

The Heat added two insurance runs in the eight, and Brendan Wise shut down the South Australians in the ninth to close the series.

The Heat’s young pitchers Nathan Driessen and Todd Murphy shut the South Australian bats and both had great performances.  Murphy picked up the win throwing 3 innings giving up two his, while Driessen pitched 4.1 innings giving up two hit and recorded three strikeouts..

The Heat travel to NSW next week and return home to Perth January 21 -23 against Victoria.
