Australia defeats USA
The Australian women have continued their amazing run of form at the World Cup with a 19-6 annihilation of the USA in front over over 7000 fans in Maracay.
The win secured Australia third position overall and a spot in the medal round where they will play Venezuela on Saturday night.
The Aussies got off to a great start with three run in the top of the first inning thanks to RBI hits from Katie Gaynor, Kim McMillan and Tahnee Lovering.
The USA answered back with one in the bottom half, however Australia took the score out to 7-1 with four runs in the second with RBI hits to Gaynor, Amy McCann and Samantha Hamilton.
In the fourth, Australia edged another run in front after a double from McCann scored Gaynor who also reached on a double.
Heading into the fifth inning with the score 8-2, the Australians piled on another four runs with hits to Bronwyn Gell, Shae Lilliywhite, Christina Kreppold and Gaynor.
In the bottom half, and with the score 12-2 Australia was looking for a mercy end to to the game. However, nerves got the better of the team and three errors allowed the USA to prolong the inevitable and bring the game to 12-6.
And in true fashion of the game, Australia stormed right back with seven runs with hits to Lillywhite, McMillan, McCann and Lovering.
And with the score now 19-6, the USA were retired 1-2-3 to end the game via the mercy rule.
On the mound, sixteen-year-old Melinda Latimer once again showed poise beyond her years in just her second start and she moved to 2-0 after four innings of work which allowed just two earned runs off seven hits. Taylah Welch and Laura Neads relieved Latimer and held on for the win.
With the bat, Gaynor (3-4, 2B, 4 runs, 4 RBIs) was the stand out with McCann (3-3, 2B, 3RBIs, run), McMillan (2-2, 2B, 3RBIs) and Lovering (2-5, 2B, 4 RBIs) and Lillywhite (2-3, 4 runs) also highlights.
Australia will now face Venezuela at 7pm on Satuday night Venezuelan time (9.30am AEST Sunday) for a spot in the gold medal game. Japan will face the USA for the other position with the losers to play for bronze.
